Frequently Asked Questions
How does Crest Alert work?
Crest Alert uses a flood sensor installed near the river or waterway you want to monitor. When floodwater reaches the sensor, the system activates a loud siren and flashing warning light to alert people nearby.
It is designed to provide a local warning at the property where people are actually at risk.
What happens if the sensor is damaged or washed away?
If the sensor cable is cut, disconnected, or the sensor is removed, the system activates the alarm.
This fail-safe design helps ensure the system still warns you if the sensor is damaged or carried away by floodwater.
How do I know the system is on and monitoring?
A small green status light on the cabinet blinks continuously during normal operation.
If the light is blinking, the system is powered and monitoring the sensor.
What happens during a power outage?
Crest Alert operates on a 12-volt battery. If utility power or solar charging is lost, the system can continue monitoring and remain ready to alarm for about three days without charging input.
How far away can the sensor be placed?
The sensor can be installed up to 600 feet from the alarm cabinet.
This allows the sensor to be placed near the river while the alarm remains closer to buildings or occupied areas.
Can rain or waves trigger the alarm?
The sensor is designed to detect sustained water contact. Normal rain, splashing, or brief wave action should not activate the system.
Proper sensor placement is important to avoid nuisance alarms.
Can the system operate off-grid?
Yes. Solar-powered systems are designed to operate off-grid. AC-powered systems can also include solar charging for additional redundancy.
Where should the sensor be installed?
The sensor should be installed at the point on your property where floodwater becomes a concern or where you want an early warning to move people to safety.
Property owners know their land best, and detailed sensor placement guidance is included with the installation instructions.
How loud is the alarm?
Crest Alert uses a 100-watt siren comparable in volume to a fire truck or police siren.
It is designed to get attention quickly and wake people nearby, including at night.
Can I install the system myself?
Yes. Many customers install the system themselves.
Installation typically includes mounting the cabinet, connecting the battery, and running conduit to the sensor. Detailed installation instructions are provided, and phone support is available if needed.
Does the system require maintenance?
Yes. Like a smoke detector, Crest Alert should be tested regularly to make sure it is ready when needed.
We recommend testing the system monthly, keeping the sensor area clear, and replacing the battery every 2 to 3 years.
Can the alarm be heard inside a house or building?
In most installations, yes.
The 100-watt siren is designed to be heard clearly from nearby buildings, especially at night when background noise is lower. Actual sound levels will vary depending on distance, terrain, building construction, and ambient noise.
Why doesn’t Crest Alert rely on apps or internet service?
Apps, internet service, and cell networks can fail, lose power, or be missed during the night.
Crest Alert is designed to provide a direct local warning at the property when floodwater reaches the sensor.
Why is there an app mentioned with my solar-equipped alarm?
Some solar-equipped systems use a solar charge controller that offers an optional app for changing charging settings.
The app is not required for the alarm to function. Crest Alert alarms work without apps, internet connections, or user accounts. The solar charge controller is pre-configured for an AGM battery before the system ships.
Is this a replacement for official weather alerts?
No. Crest Alert is designed as an on-site warning system that adds local awareness at the property.
It can be used alongside weather alerts and emergency notifications, not as a replacement for broader regional warning systems.
What if the system breaks?
Crest Alert includes a 5-year limited warranty, excluding the battery.
If a covered component fails during the warranty period, we will repair or replace it. Outside the warranty period, Crest Alert supports right to repair and does not use proprietary replacement parts. We can identify the parts needed for repair or supply them directly.
